Smoochie2 ($6500)
"Crystal Shine", APHA #870,634, 2006 tobiano mare

- Has been roped off, held some calves for doctoring.
At Clements I used her for a Ranch Roping Clinic. There I roped off her to catch light weight calves. She never even bobbed an ear at the rope swinging. And when I finally caught my calf, she worked the rope (with my direction) easily and precisely. When it came time to stretch the calf out for doctoring, she totally understood her job and held the hinds w/ little direction from me.
- Super cowey.
She spent 45 days in the yard when I first started her. I taught her all the basics while on the job, stop and go, give to the leg and hands, hustle and get’er done. I then got busy w/ other horses, and turned her out till mid February. I brought her back to the yard to leg her up for spring riding. She immediately started watching a cow, and doing a great job when we had to pull one. On her second day back to work, she asked for the chance to do it by herself. This mare is absolutely amazing. She not only brought the calf out with the reins on her neck, but she also kept the correct form in doing so. I was blown away. What a horse.
- Easy to catch, good for farrier, easy for vet.
You can catch her in any sized pasture, she will just stand and wait for you to get the halter on. She stands very quietly for the farrier, never causes any problems. She also stands quietly for wormer, vaccinations and fly spray.
- Good traveler.
I took her to the Extreme Cowboy Race in Clements, Ks. All the stalls had already been taken. The choices were for her to sleep on the trailer or to sleep while tied to the trailer. I wanted to put my own bedroll on the trailer, so she had to deal w/ staying tied for a couple of nights.
I tied her long enough to reach the water and her hay pile. She very quietly and sweetly dealt with it, plus the show atmosphere, and the visitors I had to my “Camp”.
- Reliable for beginning riders.
At the moment, Smooch is on R&R from her training schedule. So, while I'm not riding her, one of my students got to tootle her around on some nice easy outside rides. The student was very much a beginner rider, newly familiar with the basic signals, stop, go, left and right. Smooch did a fine job responding to the signals as they were given, and the lady rode her safely on a nice hourlong outside ride.

All my horses are started in the feedyard. I ride them there to introduce them to a day’s work, and to teach them to think. Click here for a description of feedyard life. I love what the yard work does for my horse’s minds. However, there is only so much training you can do while getting “The Job” done. This means, that I usually take them out of the yard after 30 to 45 days and continue their training at home. I then bring them back to the yard now and again to let them try out their new skills.
